When is Mardi Gras?
Carnival festivities officially commence on January 6th, commonly known as the Twelfth Night. This marks the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas and thus signals the end of the holiday season. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and denotes a day of indulging in rich, fatty foods before Lenten fasting begins.
Practices associated with Shrovetide celebrations before Lent also fall under this banner. The first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3rd, 1699 when French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Sieur de Bienville made landfall near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. They held a little fete there and named it "Point du Mardi Gras".
